Stay Healthy While Traveling in the Maldives
Your honeymoon should be all about romance and relaxation—so it’s important to take the right health precautions before your trip. Here’s what you need to know about staying healthy while visiting the Maldives.
Pre-Travel Health Check
We recommend visiting your local GP or travel clinic at least four weeks before your departure. They can advise you on any necessary vaccinations and ensure your routine immunisations are up to date.
Recommended Vaccinations
The Maldives is generally a low-risk destination, but here are a few vaccinations to consider before you travel. Please consult a medical professional for personalised advice:
- Routine vaccinations: Make sure your standard immunisations are current (such as MMR, Polio, and Influenza).
- Courses or boosters advised: Diphtheria, Tetanus.
- Other vaccines to consider: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid—particularly if you plan on exploring local islands or dining outside your resort.
Health Insurance
We strongly recommend having travel health insurance for peace of mind during your honeymoon. Click here to book your insurance for the Maldives.
Vaccine & Health Notes
Hepatitis A
Transmitted through contaminated food and water or close contact with an infected person. While luxury resorts maintain high standards, it’s still worth considering if you're exploring beyond your accommodation.
Hepatitis B
Spread through contact with blood or bodily fluids. It’s recommended for longer stays or if you may need medical care while abroad.
Tetanus
Caused by bacteria found in soil and entering through cuts or wounds. A booster may be advised if you haven’t had one in the past 10 years.
Typhoid
Contracted through contaminated food or water. Consider this vaccine if you’ll be eating at local spots or venturing beyond your resort.
Mosquito Bite Prevention
The Maldives is not a malaria-risk area, but mosquito-borne illnesses like Dengue Fever can occur. To stay protected:
- Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin
- Wear long sleeves and trousers, especially at dusk and dawn
- Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened accommodation
- Mosquito repellent sprays are widely available at most resorts if you need them
