Stay Healthy While Traveling in Bali

Getting sick during your honeymoon is the last thing you want. To ensure a smooth and worry-free trip, we recommend taking the necessary health precautions before traveling.

Pre-Travel Health Check

Visit your local GP or healthcare provider at least four weeks before departure. They can assess your medical history and advise on any vaccinations or medications you may need for Bali.

Recommended Vaccinations

Below are our recommendations, but please consult your healthcare professional for personalized advice:

  • Ensure your routine vaccinations and boosters are up to date.
  • Courses or boosters advised: Diphtheria, Tetanus.
  • Additional vaccines to consider: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Typhoid, and Japanese Encephalitis.

Vaccine & Health Notes

Hepatitis A

Transmitted through contaminated food, water, or person-to-person contact via the fecal-oral route.

Japanese Encephalitis

Spread by infected mosquitoes, particularly in rural areas with rice paddies. The risk is higher for long-term stays or those outdoors between dusk and dawn.

Rabies

Transmitted through the saliva of infected animals (dogs, cats, bats, monkeys) via bites, scratches, or licks to broken skin. The risk is higher for travelers spending extended time in rural areas or engaging in outdoor activities such as trekking or cycling. Even with pre-travel vaccination, immediate medical care is required after any exposure.

Tetanus

Caused by bacteria found in soil, entering through cuts, burns, or wounds. Ensure you've had the full tetanus vaccine series, as a booster may be needed if traveling to areas with limited medical care.

Typhoid

Mainly spread through contaminated food and water. The risk is higher in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water.

Dengue Fever

Spread by mosquitoes, Dengue Fever is common in Bali, particularly during the rainy season. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, and rash. There is no specific vaccine widely available for travelers, so prevention is key.

Mosquito Bite Prevention

To reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses such as Dengue Fever and Japanese Encephalitis, consider these precautions:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.
  • Wear long-sleeved clothing and pants, especially at dawn and dusk.
  • Stay in accommodations with air conditioning or screened windows.
  • Use mosquito nets if sleeping in open areas.
  • Mosquito repellent sprays are widely available in Bali if you need extra protection.
